Our Learning

Lonsdale School provides a broad and balanced curriculum, which is accessible to all. It is key to the pupils’ progression to have a curriculum that enables a smooth progression which includes continuity from Early Years Foundation Stage through to Post 16.

We aim to teach a stimulating and relevant curriculum in a format that is appropriate for each pupil following individual learning plans which are co-produced by school, the pupil, parents/carers and other professionals working with our children and young people. The route a pupil takes in their learning journey can be through externally assessed qualifications such as GCSE or BTEC or a basic skills and life skills programme whereby differentiated teaching enables pupils to learn and achieve in school and beyond.

We aim to equip our pupils with 21st century skills which will enable them to transition and be prepared for adulthood and lifelong learning when they leave school.

We build our curriculum around the needs of our pupils identifying their individual starting points and looking at development by stage rather than age. We plan carefully for transitions between phases and to ensure that pupils continue to make progress throughout every key stage at school.

We use dreams and aspiration of our children and young people, their parents and everyone working with a pupil to set aspirational and holistic targets for their learning and development. Pupils' targets are linked to Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). Lonsdale's NEW HORIZONS Framework helps us to develop and capture individual learning pathways and holistic progress.
