DofE Silver Expedition to Norfolk - April 2018
Day 1 (Monday 23rd):
After a two-hour drive into the deepest darkest Norfolk, we walked 5 miles along the Marriotts Way. The walk took us about three hours! We arrived at our campsite and put up our tents. Mrs Ottridge has bagged the little orange tent in the middle. We cooked our dinner; sausages, beans and mash. Bradley, Nathan and Joe sorted the washing up out afterwards.
Joe's weather report for the day: cloudy, dry, a bit of sun and quite windy.
We are looking forward to our cooked bananas and chocolate for pudding, and then we will be off to bed!
Day 2 (Tuesday 24th):
After a good night's sleep, we were up at 7am and soon cooking bacon for our breakfast. We then had to prepare our lunch, pack our day bags, get dressed and head off to the starting point for our walk. Using the navigation points on our maps, we walked 7 miles from Freeland Corner to Whitwell Station. This took us about 3 hours. On the way, we met a retired working dog called Penny. She was a rescue dog and was a little timid when we first met her. But after Jordan and Alana had thrown her dummy (her training toy) for her a couple of times and she had sniffed it out, she became very friendly!
We are now sitting around the fire cooking tea (pasta followed by marshmallows).
Joe's weather report: The day started dry but cloudy. It started to rain when we had finished our walk and were under the umbrellas at the station cafe. The team had made the correct decision to finish the walk before stopping to eat lunch!
All students have worked well as a team supporting each other, especially when some were feeling very tired during the walk. We are all feeling a little bit tired now and are looking forward to an early night!
Day 3 (Wednesday 25th):
8.40am - Good morning! We had torrential rain in the night, but we all stayed dry. We are just eating breakfast before striking camp, packing the buses and heading off for our final walk.
12.25 - We just had lunch and will be heading back soon. After a stormy night and the final walk, everyone is very tired but happy. We will arrive back at school about 3pm.
3.30pm - The DofE expedition arrived back at school at 3.30pm. All tents had to be unpacked and are drying in the dining room over night.Well done to all DofE students and staff for a successful camping trip!
